Miss Universe, one of the world’s most prestigious beauty pageants, has taken a significant step in inclusivity by welcoming transgender women to compete in their glitzy competition. Here’s the full story.
Miss Netherlands Sets New Milestone
The move follows the recent victory of Rikkie Valerie Kolle, the winner of the Miss Netherlands title, who was the second transgender woman to compete in Miss Universe.
Her success sparked controversy and appreciation, with Kolle thanking her critics for giving her a broader platform to showcase her talent.
Trans Women Are Women
In response to the backlash, a spokesperson for Miss Universe said, “Trans women are women, full stop. We are here to celebrate women, full stop.
Our policy for more than a decade requires that Trans women contestants have had gender-affirming surgery and, in fact, five years ago a trans woman delegate competed on the Miss Universe Stage.”
The support for transgender contestants, however, does not come without controversy.
Conservative voices have voiced their opposition, leading to boycotts of the brands associated with these pageants.
The Failure to Respond
On the other hand, some members of the LGBTQ+ community have criticized the pageants for not going far enough in supporting transgender individuals and failing to respond adequately to criticism.
The Trans Billionaire
The changes occurred after Transgender billionaire Anne Jakrajutatip, who transitioned from male to female in her mid-30s, took over the Miss Universe organization from Donald Trump in October last year.
The Changes in the Competition
Jakrajutatip has been implementing sweeping changes to the competition, including eliminating categories such as “most photogenic” and “best swimwear,” while emphasizing women’s empowerment.
Anne Jakrajutatip’s Reign
Her acquisition of Miss Universe, Miss USA, and Miss Teen USA for $20 million has marked the end of 70 years of men running the pageant.
A Trans Rights Activist Icon
Jakrajutatip has been an activist icon in Thailand, advocating for transgender rights through the Life Inspired for Transsexual Foundation (LIFT) charity.
While Miss Universe and Miss America have embraced transgender contestants, they both maintain the prerequisite of gender-affirming surgery.
Discrimination Found Within Inclusion
This criterion has drawn criticism from some quarters, with concerns raised about the potential exclusion of transgender individuals who have not undergone such procedures.
Challenges in Miss World Pageant
While Miss Universe and Miss America have made strides in inclusivity, the Miss World pageant continues to face scrutiny for its stringent rules regarding contestants.
Currently, it remains unclear what Miss World’s policies are regarding transgender competitors, raising questions about the pageant’s commitment to diversity.
Legal and Cultural Challenges
Plus, while Miss Universe and Miss America embrace transgender women, they also face the challenge of navigating legal and cultural differences across participating countries.
In some nations, laws and societal attitudes may not be as accepting of transgender rights, potentially impacting contestant eligibility and local public sentiment.
A Separate Miss Trans-World for Transgender Women…
Several social media users expressed their thoughts on the incident.
One YouTube user wrote, “Trans-woman or Transgender is a very broad term…It is a different category and should be treated as such…Just as there is a Miss World for women and Mister World for men, there should be a separate Miss Trans-World for transgender women.. .”
Another Twitter user commented, “In other words, he is the next Miss universe.”
