“I Was Lonely” – Woman Made Thousands of False Emergency Calls in a 2-Year Period

A Japanese woman was arrested for making thousands of false emergency calls for things like stomach and leg aches so someone would listen to her and give her attention.

She Allegedly Made 2,761 False Emergency Calls

A 51-year-old Japanese woman named Hiroko Hatagami has been taken into custody after allegedly making a staggering 2,761 false emergency calls over a period of approximately two years and nine months, according to reports by The Independent. 

Arrested for Obstructing Emergency Operations

Hatagami, an unemployed resident of Matsudo in Japan’s Chiba prefecture, was arrested on suspicion of obstructing the operations of the local fire department.

Her Reasons for Calling Were Not Emergencies

Between August 2020 and May 2023, Hatagami repeatedly dialed the Matsudo fire department, fabricating various emergency reasons such as stomach aches, drug overdoses, and aching legs.

She Would Deny Calling

Upon the arrival of the dispatched ambulances, she would turn them away, claiming, “I didn’t make the call” or “I don’t want to take an ambulance.” 

The Police Department Warned Her

Despite warnings from both the fire department and the police station to cease her false calls, Hatagami persisted in her behavior. 

She Was Ultimately Arrested

Following a damage report filed by the emergency services department on June 20, she was ultimately arrested.

She Said She Was Lonely

During investigations, Hatagami confessed that her motivation for making the false emergency calls stemmed from loneliness and a desire for attention. 

She Wanted Someone to Give Her Attention

This Isn’t the First Time This Happened

This incident echoed a similar case in 2013 when Japanese police apprehended a woman who had made over 15,000 calls to them within a six-month period. 

A Result of Profound Loneliness

Authorities stated that her calls lacked meaning and were simply a result of profound loneliness.
