Trump-backed gubernatorial candidate Jeff Landry has won his bid for Louisiana governor. Find out what this means for the LGBTQ community moving forward.
Governor’s Race Comes to an End
Current Attorney General and future Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry has brought a closely-watched race to an end with his victory.
A vocal conservative, Landry has had the support of former president Donald Trump and other high-profile GOP members.
Landry’s History of Conservative Policies
In his time as attorney general, Landry has backed laws that have had great impacts on marginalized groups.
Women have been faced with an extreme abortion ban, and transgender children are barred from receiving gender-affirming medical care.
LGBT Community Worried
LGBTQ rights have been among the issues in Landry’s crosshairs. Advocates worry that under his leadership, the LGBTQ community will be at risk of losing more rights.
Former Governor Out Due to Term Limits
Landry takes the seat from current Governor John Bel Edwards, who maxed out his term limit and was not running for re-election as a result.
Timeline of Anti-LGBTQ Activity
In 2019, Landry sided with business owners who had fired employees for being part of the LGBTQ community.
He even testified to the Supreme Court in the case from his capacity as attorney general.
Title IX Interpretation Among Landry’s Concerns
Later, in 2021, alongside other attorneys general, he signed a letter to President Biden imploring him to disallow the Department of Education to use Title IX to protect LGBTQ students.
Fears About Children’s Privacy in Schools
He argued that schools would harm cisgender students by being unable to make everyone use the bathrooms and showers that align with their birth sex.
He worried that “Schools will no longer be able to preserve the privacy of middle school and high school students.”
Landry’s Main Focal Points
When asked recently specifically about LGBTQ issues, Landry said, “I’m focused on crime, education, and the economy.”
He did note that he was concerned about gender-affirming care and pronoun discussion in schools.
“Facts” About Gender
Landry spoke about sex and gender issues with Shannon Heckt during an interview in August.
Making his stance on transgender people clear, he said nothing can change the “facts” about the sex a person is born with.
Argument Based on Assigned Sex at Birth
“It’s hard to have a discussion on that and reach a consensus when we can’t come to an agreement on things that are factual. You were born a woman; that’s an absolute fact. I was born a man. I mean, there’s no changing that. So this whole discussion to me is problematic.”
Landry’s Gay Brother Speaks Out
In 2016, Landry’s own brother spoke out against the now-Governor for his stance on limiting LGBTQ rights in the workplace. Nicholas Landry, who is openly gay, described being ostracized from his family because of it.
Landry Brother Wants Equal Rights, Condemns Discrimination
In a YouTube video, Nicholas said, “I can’t stay silent any longer…I just want my inalienable rights.” He went on to say, “that kind of bigotry and that kind of discrimination is just uncalled for.”
Queer Family Does Not Sway Landry
Despite having a gay brother, Jeff Landry has seemingly not softened his stance on LGBTQ rights.
While he does not make it a primary facet of his platform, he does speak openly about his beliefs when asked directly.
Concerns About Future Bans
Some worry that his support of a bill banning “sexually explicit material” from children is actually about restricting access to LGBTQ books, even ones that are not actually explicit.
Whether LGBTQ books in Louisiana will be classed as “sexually explicit” remains to be seen.
GOP Agenda Poised to Take Over
Landry is expected to bring a staunchly conservative agenda back to the governor’s mansion in Louisiana after the Deep South’s only democratic governor vacates his seat.
