After a non-consensual kiss between Spain’s Football President and one of the female players, critics are outraged and calling for his resignation. Here’s the full story.
Spain Beats Australia
After the women’s national team from Spain beat Australia in the Women’s World Cup, Spain’s Football President kissed one of the female players on the lips.
Forceful “Celebratory” Kiss
Luis Rubiales is the President of the Royal Spanish Football Federation in Spain. After an exciting World Cup win, Rubiales let his emotions get the better of him when he forcibly kissed 33-year-old footballer, Jenni Hermoso on the lips.
The kiss sparked outrage all over the world because although Rubiales said the kiss was mutual and with consent,” Hermoso said it was “not consensual.”
She Did Not Like It
In a video posted on Instagram, Hermoso said, “I did not like it, but what could I do?”
Women Refusing to Play
Spain’s national women’s team said they “refuse to play” anymore matches until Rubiales resigns. But there’s just one problem… Rubiales refuses to resign.
Rubiales Speaks Out
In a speech given by Rubiales after the incident, he said Hermoso “lifted” him up in a celebratory gesture and he asked her for “a little kiss,” to which she agreed.
Hermoso Speaks Out
Hermoso responded to Rubiales’ statement with a statement of her own. She said, “I want to clarify that…at no time did I consent to the kiss he gave me and, of course, in no case did I seek to lift the president.”
Rubiales Not Happy
Rubiales didn’t seem to like that Hermoso was speaking out against him. He said, “I do not tolerate that my word is questioned and much less that words that I have not said are invented.”
The kissing incident wasn’t the first time Rubiales was under fire during the Women’s World Cup.
He caused controversy earlier in the World Cup when he grabbed his crotch “in celebration” after Spain scored a goal. He was standing right next to Queen Letizia and her 16-year-old daughter.
He Won’t Apologize
After the crotch-grabbing incident, Rubiales apologized for his actions which is more than he’s done after the unwanted kiss to Hermoso.
Alex on Twitter called the football president “scandalous” and said he “should be fired right away.”
One fan from Spain was not happy about Rubiales kissing Hermoso. This person commented on a Twitter post saying Rubiales’ actions were “inexcusable” and he crossed “personal boundaries.”
Rubiales was suspended for 90 days by FIFA after refusing to resign from his position.
Protests in Support of Hermoso
Hundreds of people in Madrid protested in support of Jenni Hermoso. Protestors carried banners that read, “Sexists and gentlemen, sports are for everyone” and “Out with macho federations.”
Calling For Rubiales’ Resignation
The message was clear that people were against Luis Rubiales and his actions. They said they will not stop until Rubiales resigns.
The account by the name of SOJ on Twitter said that Rubiales’ resignation should be “non-negotiable” and that he should be “prosecuted for that bad behavior.”
Critics are calling Rubiales’ behavior sexual harassment, but his mother said her son is receiving “inhumane treatment.” She said her son did not deserve the way he was being treated.
Mother Locks Herself in a Church
Rubiales’ mother, Angeles Bejar, locked herself in a church and went on a hunger strike in support of her son. Critics said she has a “my son is never wrong” mentality.
Apologize, Resign, and Change
Others said Rubiales’ mother was “enabling his bad behavior” and suggested she encourage her son to “apologize, resign, and change his behavior” instead.
